Bukchon Hanok Village & Insadong: Traditional Seoul Without the Bags
Seoul’s most photogenic neighborhoods — best explored hands-free
Bukchon Hanok Village and Insadong are two of Seoul’s most visited and most photographed destinations — and they’re both completely unsuitable for suitcases. Bukchon’s steep stone alleyways between 600-year-old traditional homes (hanok), and Insadong’s narrow pedestrian lane filled with tea houses and craft shops, are best experienced completely hands-free.
Bukchon Hanok Village
Bukchon (북촌) sits between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace in Jongno-gu. The village consists of hundreds of preserved hanok (traditional wooden houses) along winding hillside alleys. The most famous viewpoint is Bukchon-ro 11-gil, where the lane curves and you can see rows of curved rooftops against the Seoul skyline.
Tips: Visit before 9am to beat the crowds. Many residents still live here — be quiet and respectful. Wear comfortable shoes; the alleys are steep.
Insadong
Insadong is Seoul’s arts and crafts quarter. The main pedestrian street (Insadong-gil) is lined with Korean ceramics, calligraphy supplies, vintage items, and traditional food. Don’t miss Ssamziegil, a courtyard mall with independent Korean designers, or a traditional tea ceremony at one of the many tea houses.
