The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is one of the most photographed buildings in Korea — a sweeping silver structure designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, completed in 2014. Beyond its extraordinary architecture, DDP is a hub for design exhibitions, fashion shows, cultural events, and is surrounded by Seoul’s famous wholesale fashion markets, which operate through the night.

What to Do at DDP

• Architecture tour: The building itself is a work of art — walk the curved exterior and explore the internal exhibition spaces. Free to enter the main plaza area at any time
• Design exhibitions: DDP hosts rotating international design and art exhibitions. Check the schedule at ddp.or.kr
• DDP Rose Garden: In spring, tens of thousands of roses bloom around the building — spectacular at night with illuminations
• Night markets: The surrounding Dongdaemun area has Korea’s largest concentration of fashion wholesale markets — open from 8pm to 5am
• Dongdaemun History & Culture Park: Beneath DDP, archaeological remains from the Joseon dynasty were discovered during construction and are now on display

DDP at Night: Seoul’s Most Photogenic After Dark

DDP is extraordinary at night — the silver surface is illuminated and the surrounding fashion market towers glow in neon. This is one of the best places in Seoul for night photography. The DDP Rose Garden (March–May) after dark is particularly stunning. The area is open 24 hours and extremely safe.

Getting to DDP

DDP is served by Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station (Lines 2, 4, 5) — one of Seoul’s largest interchange stations. If you’re traveling with luggage, note that this station is one of the most complex in Seoul for transfers. Send your bags ahead and navigate it hands-free.
