Since June 2023, Korea officially uses international age — but “Korean age” is still widely used socially.

How Does Korean Age Work?

In the traditional Korean age system, you are 1 year old the day you are born, and everyone gains a year together on January 1st — not on their birthday. That means a baby born on December 31st turns 2 years old the very next day! This is why your Korean age is always 1–2 years higher than your international age.

The formula is simple: Korean age = Current year − Birth year + 1. Your birthday doesn't matter at all — only the year you were born.

Didn't Korea Abolish Korean Age in 2023?

Yes — officially. Since June 28, 2023, South Korea standardized all legal and administrative documents to use international age (만 나이, man-nai). But socially, Korean age is still very much alive. Koreans still commonly answer with their Korean age when asked how old they are, K-pop fan communities still use it, and it determines the all-important question of who is oppa, unnie, hyung, or noona. If you're visiting Korea or talking with Korean friends, knowing both numbers saves a lot of confusion.

The Three Korean Age Systems Explained

1. International age (만 나이) — the age you already know. Starts at 0, increases on your birthday. Now the official legal standard in Korea.

2. Korean age (세는 나이) — the traditional system. Starts at 1, increases every January 1st. Still used socially.

3. Year age (연 나이) — current year minus birth year. Still used for a few specific laws like military conscription, and the legal drinking/smoking age (you can drink in Korea from January 1st of the year you turn 19 internationally).

Why Age Matters So Much in Korea

Age isn't just a number in Korea — it shapes language and relationships. Korean has built-in honorifics, and the way you speak to someone older is different from how you speak to a friend the same age. That's why "How old are you?" is often one of the first questions Koreans ask when meeting someone new. Two people born in the same calendar year are chingu (same-age friends), which is also why the Korean age system — where everyone born in the same year shares the same age — has survived so long culturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Korean age?

Take the current year, subtract your birth year, and add 1. For example, if you were born in 2000, your Korean age in 2026 is 27 — regardless of whether you've had your birthday yet.

Is Korean age still used in 2026?

Legally, no — Korea switched to international age in June 2023. Socially, yes — Korean age is still widely used in daily conversation, among friends, and in K-pop fan culture.

Why is my Korean age 2 years older than my real age?

You start at 1 when born, and gain a year every January 1st. If your birthday hasn't come yet this year, the gap between your Korean age and international age is 2 years; after your birthday it's 1 year.

What age can you drink in Korea?

The legal drinking age uses "year age": you can drink from January 1st of the year you turn 19 internationally. For most foreigners, that means 19+ (international age) is safely legal — bring your passport as ID.
