Updated July 2026. Tourism/short visits only β always confirm with your nearest Korean embassy or k-eta.go.kr before booking.
Do You Need a Visa to Visit South Korea?
For most travelers, the answer is no visa needed β South Korea has visa-waiver agreements with over 100 countries. What trips people up is the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization), an online pre-approval similar to the US ESTA. Whether you need one depends on your nationality, and the rules changed again for 2026 β which is exactly what this checker is for.
The K-ETA Exemption β Extended Through December 31, 2026
Here’s the best news for 2026 travelers: Korea’s Ministry of Justice extended the temporary K-ETA exemption for 67 countries and territories until December 31, 2026. If you hold a passport from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, or most of Europe (plus more β use the checker above), you can board your flight to Korea with nothing but your passport. No K-ETA, no visa, no fee.
One small thing remains: the e-Arrival card, a free online form you fill in within 3 days before arrival. Travelers who hold a valid K-ETA are exempt from the arrival card β which is why some frequent visitors still choose to buy the optional K-ETA (β©10,000, valid 3 years).
Who Still Needs a K-ETA in 2026?
Visa-free nationalities that are not on the exemption list still need to apply for K-ETA before flying β this includes travelers from Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and much of Latin America. Apply at the official site k-eta.go.kr (beware of lookalike scam sites charging 5β10Γ the real fee!). Approval usually arrives within minutes to a few hours, but apply at least 72 hours before departure to be safe.
Who Needs an Actual Visa?
Travelers from China (individual tourists), India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and most of South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa need a C-3 short-term visitor visa from a Korean embassy or consulate. Requirements typically include a passport photo, bank statements, an itinerary, and proof of employment or study. Processing takes about 1β2 weeks, so don’t leave it until the last minute.
