Why locals rely on hot packs and thermals
Seoul’s January averages a high of only 2.1°C and a low of −5.5°C, and December and February lows average around −3°C (Korea Meteorological Administration, 1991–2020 normals). Koreans deal with it in layers: a thin heat-retaining base layer under normal clothes, then a padded coat, with a hot pack in the pocket.
- Two types of hot pack. Pocket packs (흔드는 핫팩) warm your hands; stick-on packs (붙이는 핫팩) go on the outside of your underwear at the lower back or stomach. The heating time is printed on each pack.
- Use them safely. Never stick a pack directly on skin and do not sleep with one on — the packaging warns about low-temperature burns. Keep them away from young children.
- Why thermals beat a second sweater: Korean buildings, subway cars and cafes are well heated, so you will go in and out of the cold all day. A thin base layer keeps you warm outside without overheating indoors.
- Best moments to have them: waiting for the New Year bell at Bosingak, night markets, outdoor palace visits, DMZ tours and ski days in Gangwon-do, which is colder than Seoul.
Still underdressed? Add a padded winter jacket or a gloves, hat and scarf set to the same delivery. For trip planning, see Seoul in Winter and the Korea packing list by month.

FAQ — hot packs and thermal underwear in Seoul
Can I buy hot packs at a Korean convenience store instead?
Yes, many convenience stores sell single hot packs in winter, and that is the fastest option tonight. A delivered box works out cheaper per pack if you need several days’ worth, and thermal underwear sets are harder to find there in a full range of sizes.
How long does a Korean hot pack stay warm?
It depends on the product. The heating time is printed on each pack, and we tell you the duration of the exact item before you pay.
Can I take hot packs home on the plane?
Airline rules differ, so check with your airline before packing them. Unused packs are light and many travelers take spares home.
What if the thermal set doesn’t fit?
Underwear is often non-returnable once opened under the store’s policy, so we confirm your size first. Our service fee is non-refundable. If your size is sold out, we offer an equivalent set and only order after you agree.
Who are you?
