Taxis in Seoul, Without the Stress

Fares, surcharges, and how to book a cab in English using the Kakao T app.

Seoul’s subway is brilliant, but sometimes you just want a door-to-door ride — late at night, in the rain, or with tired feet. The good news: taxis in Seoul are clean, metered, affordable, and easy to book with the Kakao T app, even if you don’t speak Korean or have a local phone number. This guide covers what a ride actually costs in 2026, the surcharges to watch for, and how to hail or app your way around like a local.

Fares and rules can change, so use the numbers below as a guide and check the meter on every ride.

What a Seoul Taxi Costs in 2026

For a standard mid-size taxi in Seoul, the base fare is 4,800 won (about US$3.10), which covers the first 1.6 km. After that, the meter ticks up roughly 100 won for every 131 meters (or per short interval of time when traffic is crawling). At June 2026 rates of about 1,540 won to the US dollar, a typical short city hop lands around 6,000–9,000 won (~US$4–6).

That makes short taxi rides genuinely cheap by global standards — often a smart choice for two or more people, or when you’re carrying shopping. For longer hauls or when you have luggage, though, compare with the subway or our luggage delivery service so you’re not paying to haul heavy bags across town.

Surcharges: Late-Night & Out-of-City

This is where bills can surprise visitors. The two big ones:

  • Late-night surcharge: From 11 PM to 2 AM, a 40% surcharge applies (base fare jumps to around 6,700 won). In the shoulder hours (10–11 PM and 2–4 AM) it’s about 20% (base around 5,800 won).
  • Out-of-city surcharge: Heading beyond Seoul’s limits — say into Gyeonggi-do or Incheon — adds roughly 20%. Late at night, surcharges can stack and push the total well above the meter’s daytime rate.

None of this is a scam — it’s the official metered structure, and the app will usually show the surcharge upfront. Just don’t be alarmed if a midnight airport run costs noticeably more than the same trip at noon.

Taxi Colors & Types Explained

Regular taxis (orange/silver)

The everyday metered cabs you’ll use most. Same fare structure across the fleet.

Deluxe & large taxis (black, or vans)

“Mobeom” deluxe taxis and jumbo vans are roomier and pricier — base fare around 7,000 won covering the first 3 km, with a different late-night structure. Great for groups or extra luggage, but you’ll pay for the comfort.

In the app: Regular, Blue, Vent, Black

When you book through Kakao T you’ll see ride tiers like Regular, Blue (vetted drivers), Vent (larger vehicles) and Black (premium). For most trips, Regular is all you need.

How to Use the Kakao T App

Kakao T is Korea’s dominant ride-hailing app and the easiest way for visitors to get a cab without flagging one down or explaining your destination in Korean. It’s available in English (and Japanese) — switch language under the globe icon in settings.

  1. Download & sign up. Get Kakao T from the App Store or Google Play. You can register with email or a Kakao account, and a foreign phone number works for verification.
  2. Set your trip. Enter pickup and destination (search in English; landmarks and hotel names usually resolve fine).
  3. Pick a ride type. Regular is the standard metered cab and cheapest.
  4. Choose payment. To avoid registering a Korean card, select “Pay to the driver” — then pay by cash, foreign card, or T-money at the end. Alternatively, Kakao’s newer K-RIDE app is built for international users and lets you register an overseas card for automatic in-app payment.
  5. Track & ride. Watch the driver approach in real time, then match the plate number before getting in.

For full official fare details, the Seoul Metropolitan Government taxi page is the most authoritative source.

Smart Tips & Etiquette

  • No tipping. Tipping isn’t customary in Korea — just pay the metered fare.
  • Card or T-money works. Almost every taxi takes cards and the T-money transit card; you rarely need cash.
  • Have your destination in Hangul. If you hail on the street, show the Korean name/address on your phone — or better, let the app send it to the driver.
  • Buckle up in back. Seatbelts are required, including rear seats.
  • Empty-light = available. A red “빈차” (bin-cha, “empty”) light in the windshield means the cab is free.

FAQ

Can I use Kakao T without a Korean phone number?

Yes. You can sign up with email or a Kakao account and verify with a foreign number. Choosing “Pay to the driver” also lets you skip registering a Korean card.

Is Uber available in Seoul?

Uber operates in Korea but mostly dispatches regular licensed taxis, so prices are similar to Kakao T. Kakao T has far more cars, so it’s usually faster to get a ride.

Are Seoul taxis safe and honest?

Generally very much so — meters are standard and rides are tracked in the app. Booking through Kakao T adds a record of your driver and route for extra peace of mind.

Should I take a taxi from Incheon Airport?

It’s convenient but pricey (often 60,000–90,000+ won to central Seoul, more late at night with surcharges). The AREX train or airport bus is far cheaper; many visitors pair cheap transit with luggage delivery so they travel hands-free.
